The Inspiring Career Opportunity Award 2014/15

‘6th Form Vocational Studies’
Weatherhead High School, Wallasey, Wirral
Nominated by: Lesley Bainbridge

Weatherhead High School in Wallasey has been presented with an Inspiring Career Award at a special assembly at the school last week.

The school on Breck Road has developed a post 16 curriculum to support students with their next steps in education, training and employment.

The programme offers careers advice and is aimed at teaching young people life-skills such as money handling, letter writing, the internet, using public transport and ordering food in cafes.
The curriculum is taught using puzzles, games and team work activities and even includes a Jamie Oliver cookery course.
Teacher Lesley Bainbridge commented: “As a result of the programme we have experienced very positive feedback from parents and carers about how the young people have matured and developed over the course of the year.

“This programme provides an excellent course for students to follow and ensures that the needs of all our students, including the most vulnerable are met. It enables all learners to gain appropriate qualifications and gain crucial experience of working with others so that they are well prepared and ready for the demands of life and work.”

Students completing the programme gain additional level one and two qualifications.

Kelly Griffiths is the awards’ organiser and commented: “When students leave school it can be daunting for any young person to find their feet in life.

This curriculum offers students the chance to develop their life skills before they leave school, equipping them with valuable knowledge to help them get by. This programme is outstanding and deserves all the recognition it gets.”

She added: “Well done to everyone at Weatherhead High School, both teachers and staff.”
